Born in Cape Town's Sea Point suburb. Had a rude shock about how long ago that was when a 4th Beach 'bungalow' was sold recently for 31-and-a-half million rand. When I was growing up, 3-and-a-half thousand rand would've been more like it. But then remember, God's not making coastline any more! Have always wanted to be in radio ever since I became aware that the children's programmes way-back-then were 'live' and if one was lucky one could be a studio guest. Educated in Cape Town achieving in the end a UCT Speech and Drama Performer's Diploma. Looking back, perhaps not the most useful piece of paper I could've gone for. Fled Sea Point and the SABC Rocklands for London and the BBC, returning to S.A. when the thought of another winter was just too daunting. All those years ago specialised in classical music and drama recordings while still harbouring ambitions to be 'on air'. First fee ever, sneezing for a Kleenex tissue commercial. Worked for Manley Van Niekerk in Jo'burg in the 60s where I ran my own purpose-built (just for Ian) studio. Then to what was Ian Smith's Rhodesia, RBC News reader and morning show anchor and freelanced doing various bits and pieces for UK and US TV news services. One spin-off, got to meet Uganda's then ruler Idi Amin. And for the last 25 years or so, news anchor and presenter for Talk Radio 702.
