On the 8th of August Talk Radio 702’s Afternoon Drive Show Host David O’Sullivan took a call from ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela who made a plea for listeners to assist a Soweto family whose house burned down the previous night.
The house on Vilakazi Street, just metres away from the Nelson Mandela Museum, was gutted after a gas stove exploded. Winne, who lives in the area, pleaded with listeners for any donation to help the family. 10 family members survived the flames.
Talk Radio 702 listeners along with a couple corporates responded with a generous heart and within 45 minutes over R230 000 was raised. Businessman Mqondisi Gumede from Imison Construction pledged to demolish the old house and build a new one with three bedrooms.
The house was demolished on Friday the 21st of August. Construction was completed on Friday the 4th of September and the handover ceremony took place on Saturday the 5th of September.
