On Easter Saturday 20 years ago, Chris Hani was murdered shortly after returning from his morning run. This calculated act aimed to destroy the negotiations towards a democratic South Africa and plunge the country into a bloody civil war. However, in contrast to what many considered inevitable, inspired leadership and the common will of a previously divided people generated a unique sense of unity and sparked the emergence of our rainbow nation… Enter the Lesedi Athletic Club and their Sense of Unity 10km run… an event which aims to remember the tragedies and celebrates the successes achieved on the road to a new South Africa. Chris Hani was a regular runner, and was known for his friendly disposition as he pounded the streets of Boksburg - 10kms was his distance of choice. The run is organized to predominantly honour Hani - and Oliver Tambo - and pay tribute to Nelson Mandela. It all starts on Saturday at 6am at the Boksburg City Stadium, cnr Dudley Smith & Jubilee Road, and proceeds through Tamboville, taking in the sights & atmosphere of the suburb - including the beautiful OR Tambo Memorial - before looping back to the finish at the stadium. Entry costs just R40. Grand Masters enter for R30 and great grandmasters & blind participants participate for free. You can enter on the day from 4:30am at Boksburg City Stadium or on line at www.entrytime.com
