Recognising the experience of women in South African mines

9 December 2016 10:15 PM

Dr Asanda Benya has done work to put under the spotlight the role of women in the occupational culture of South African mines.

A chance encounter with sociology while studying medicine at Wits University resulted in an inspired turn for Dr Asanda Benya in her academic journey.

Now working as a lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), Dr Benya's work on the experiences of women working in the Lonmin Mine in Marikana has received several accolades.

She spoke to #NightTalk's Lovelyn Nwadeyi about her work and outlook as an academic.
