Public servants to have their red carpet moment at SA politician awards

19 January 2017 4:54 PM

The brains behind the South African Politician Awards denies that he is hosting the event to rub shoulders with political bigwigs.

Politicians are set to take centre stage at the first South African Politician Awards, which has raised some eyebrows.

The inaugural event has garnered some criticism for putting the limelight on public servants.

The event is an initiative by Ngavu Enterprises run by entrepreneur Lloyd Ngavu.

Ngavu says politicians will not pay to attend while the public must purchase tickets for the private function at Computicket.

Award categories include:

  • Best Parliamentarian of the Year
  • Debater of the Year
  • Committee MP of the Year
  • Women in Politics Awards
  • E-Politician of the Year Award
  • Public Campaigner of the Year
  • Best Executive Mayor of the Year
  • Best Political Party of the Year
  • South African Politician of the Year
  • Young Leader Award
  • Political Analyst of the Year Award
  • Best Dressed Male Political Figure
  • Best Dressed Female Political Figure
  • Best Premier of the Year Awards
  • Best Minister of the Year Award
  • Citizen’s Choice of the Year Award

He maintains that he is funding the event himself and will use the profits to cover the event costs.

Ngavu denies that the event is an opportunity to network with political heavyweights.

He explains that he was inspired by the State of the Nation Address and red carpet glitz and glam.

We always go to the opening of Parliament and we see some fashion trends and so forth. That's where everything started... I saw a business opportunity there.

Lloyd Ngavu, Marketing Head of Ngavu Enterprises

We want to give recognition to those politicians - not only MPs - who are doing great things in our country.

The awards ceremony is pegged to take place on Wednesday 8 February at the Cape Sun Hotel, Cape Town.

Take a listen to him explain and justify the event here:
