'The President has a new boss and that boss is Cyril Ramaphosa'

Analyst Daniel Silke says he doesn't believe everyone on the NDZ list wants to see the perpetuation of Jacob Zuma.

In his maiden speech, newly appointed ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa called for an end to corruption and stressed on the issue of unity within the ruling party.

Political analyst David Maimela says what Ramaphosa said in his speech was expected and there were no surprises, because "we need to understand the position where the ANC is today."

The ANC is in a very difficult position having had serious challenges within the organisation and in government in the past ten years.

David Maimela, Political analyst

So the talk and the language about unity is quite expected.

David Maimela, Political analyst

He says Ramaphosa's speech doesn't really say much except the symbolisation of unity and the restoration of the values of the ANC.

What is important for the country is what would happen between January 8 and the State of the Nation Address, he adds.

What I hear is the buzzword 'unity' but what arises is what makes them divided in the first place so much that they have to talk about unity and what would be the basis of that unity.

David Maimela, Political analyst

They have to say here is a set of values and principles that should unite us and all of us should stick to them and those who do not wish to stick to them then it is hard luck for them.

David Maimela, Political analyst

Political analyst Daniel Silke says there is an urgency to remove President Jacob Zuma from power.

The ANC desperately needs to distance itself from its past.

Daniel Silke, Political Analyst

That is its weakest link and its weakness is centred around the broader presidency of Jacob Zuma and it is all necessary for Ramaphosa it put himself in the top job to begin the process of renewals and also to be seen as acting implementing as president of South Africa and not just of the ANC.

Daniel Silke, Political analyst

Despite the new NEC being fairly evenly split between the two factions, Silke says this does not mean Zuma will stay.

I don't believe everyone on the NDZ list wants to see the perpetuation of Jacob Zuma.

Daniel Silke, Politcal analyst

He believes there is a broad buy-in to end the era of Jacob Zuma.

The President has a new boss and that boss is Cyril Ramaphosa.

Daniel Silke, Politcal analyst

Not to throw him to the wolves, but a gentle tap on the shoulder..your time has come.

Daniel Silke, Politcal analyst

It is up to the ANC to provide a dignified exit for Zuma.

Daniel Silke, Politcal analyst

He says legal protection for Zuma around the charges he faces will be an issue.

And what happens to those in the NEC who are implicated in state capture related issues?

Daniel Silke, Politcal analyst
