ANC welcomes signing of political party funding bill into law
The African National Congress (ANC) has welcomed the signing of the Political Party Funding Bill into law.
The presidency confirmed the move on Tuesday.
The bill provides for the creation of a Multi-Party Democracy Fund to be administered by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), which will distribute donations equitably among parties.
It also introduces a strict new regime for transparency and accountability when it comes to direct private donations to parties.
Presidency spokesperson Khusela Diko says the president still needs to consult the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) and National Treasury before they can announce a date for the bill to come into effect.
You will understand that the bill imposes certain obligations on them just in terms of the funding of the represented political parties, so gaging the heir state of readiness, the president will proclaim the effective date.Khusela Diko, presidency spokesperson
The bill is important because measures needed to be taken for us to ensure that we enhance transparency amongst our political parties. The likelihood is that the bill is going to be implemented in phases, the intention is to ensure that we enhance that transparency and those provisions that would not put a disproportionate burden on the fiscus at this point I think will be prioritised. I am sure in the next week or so we will be giving an update on how that phasing is going top happen.Khusela Diko, presidency spokesperson
