Bonga Jwambi has no formal training.
Nevertheless, the self-taught designer has exhibited widely, including at Cape Town’s swanky V&A Waterfront and Decorex, South Africa's pre-eminent décor, design and lifestyle exhibition.
In 2015 Design Indaba recognised him as an “Emerging Designer”.
From a novice scouring Khayelitsha for material, and lugging it around on public transport; Jwambi has become a recognisable face on the Cape Town art scene.
He specialises in creating trendy, yet affordable upcycled furniture with a clean, minimalistic aesthetic.
The big break Jwambi needs
In 2018, Jwambi got an invite from the Milan Design Market (MDM) in Italy that takes place during the Milan Design Week.
To represent myself and South African design at the MDM will be a dream come true… Unfortunately, I can't afford to go…
Bonga Jwambi, designer
Jwambi can carry all the production costs himself but needs financial support for shipping, travel and accommodation.
Can you help?
The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Jwambi.
