Mamabolo Matshelane discusses the miscalculations that cost him a silver medal in 2018 and how he'll avoid them this time round.

The Comrades is known as one of the world's most gruelling ultramarathons.

On Sunday morning thousands of runners will set off on this year's up run from the City Hall in Durban, to finish at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.

Sports editor at Independent Newspapers in Gauteng, Matshelane Mamabolo is gearing up for his third race after mistakes cost him a silver medal in 2018.

He joins John Maytham on Weekend Breakfast and explains that despite all his experience, he made a basic hydration miscalculation.

By the end of 75 kilometres I just started feeling very funny... I actually wasn't aware of what was wrong with me until I got to the finish and I had to go to the clinic... the nurses told me I was dehydrated and I had to get a drip.

I drank a lot of water, I drank my endurance drink, but what I did not take was drinks with electrolytes.

Mamabolo says faced with the challenge of the Comrades, even elite athletes sometimes get it wrong.

It's just such a long race... You can go there fit, you can go there very prepared, but something can go wrong.

With less than 24 hours to go before the 94th edition of the Comrades, what is Mamabolo's advice for participants?

If you've got your race pack the best is to stay away from the Expo... just relax, get some rest, get your mind tuned to what you are going to do, visualise it and if you pray - pray.
