Former South African Revenue Service (Sars) Commissioner Tom Moyane’s lawyer cross-examined Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan on Monday.

Gordhan says Moyane wanted him to resign as Finance Minister so that the capture of the institution could continue.

Evidence leader Matthew Chaskalson warned Gordhan to keep his testimony to what he personally knew and not make assertions he’s not providing evidence for.

Now outside of my knowledge, there's of course information about various meetings with Bain & Company at Nkandla and elsewhere very much prior to Mr Moyane's appointment at Sars and the implications that could be drawn on including, and this is again outside of my knowledge...

Mr Gordhan, I must ask you to confine yourself to matters within your knowledge because otherwise the evidence and the cross-examination may stray far beyond the bounds of what will be helpful to the commission...

It was a day of heated exchanges, with Moyane’s advocate, Dali Mpofu, at one point in the day asking Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to “control” Gordhan.

I ask you to please control this witness because if he's going to give unnecessary verbiage on top of the answer, then I'm going to be forced to interrupt him.
