Word N Sound empowering young people through literature

1 April 2017 12:32 PM

You can make a living from your art. The Word N Sound platform encourages young talented poets to pursue careers in their craft.

Thabiso ‘Afurakan’ Mohare is the co-founder of Word N Sound, a literature platform that is reviving the spoken word and encouraging youth to consider literary careers.

The Word N Sound platforms bring together people from all backgrounds to encourage and inspire poetry and self-expression.

Mohare explains that Word N Sound was started in 2010 when the open-mic scene in Newton, Johannesburg was dwindling.

He says that the platform is aimed at allowing township youths to express themselves and explore careers in the arts.

I was saddened that there wasn't a platform like that anymore. For me, spoken word - beyond just entertainment - is the one art form that young people easily access to express what is going in their lives.

We view poets as entrepreneurs. These are young people who are self-starters.

The ideas are in their heads, all they need is opportunity to learn how to craft these ideas into products.

We started off as an open mic event, in studio. The first show was six people. Seven years later we are a globally recognised brand that is doing project in at least three countries.

Mohare shares his passion for writing and poetry and how it can inspire social change and community upliftment.

I am a miracle because it's supposed to be 'impossible' for me to make a living off of literature, poetry, words and my own intellectual property.

Every day I interact with young people across the country who are just like me and dying for a voice and platform to speak out.
