Land reform – done right – can make South Africa prosperous (and more peaceful)

16 May 2017 8:09 PM

Bruce Whitfield interviews the famed Roelf Meyer who (with the Land Bank) is working to promote transformation in agriculture.

The Department of Land Reform owns 4000 farms! They’re not making it available… There are complications in terms of its ability to make transfers.

Roelf Meyer, In Transformation Initiative

Land by itself doesn’t make any economic contribution.

Loyiso Ndlovu, Land Bank

There is a need for land reform as far as urban properties are concerned… Not only for the RDP-dweller, but also the shack dweller.

Roelf Meyer, In Transformation Initiative

Roelf Meyer and the Land Bank are working together to promote transformation in agriculture.

On Wednesday (17 May) they launch a new initiative that will highlight successful transformation projects.

The Land Bank recently announced that it would be providing R1-billion in financing for black entrepreneurs to invest in high value agricultural economic assets.

This is in addition to undertaking R500-million worth of investments in high-value agribusinesses to support black industrialists in the sector.

It will also be providing emerging farmers with the financial and technical support that allows these farmers to expand their activities to a commercial scale.

Land Bank CEO TP Nchocho says funding alone will not lead to growth.

The transfer of skills from large commercial farmers to emerging farmers, including vulnerable groups such as women and youth is vitally important, so collaboration is essential.

TP Nchocho, Land Bank

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Meyer (In Transformation Initiative Chair) and Land Bank Executive Manager for Commercial Development Banking Loyiso Ndlovu for his weekly “The Science Of” feature.

Meyer is famed for negotiating – together with Cyril Ramaphosa – the end of apartheid.

He served as the Minister of Constitutional Affairs in the cabinet of President Nelson Mandela.

Agriculture can create jobs.

Roelf Meyer, In Transformation Initiative

We don’t have time for a discourse…

Loyiso Ndlovu, Land Bank

Participating in this sector can give employment and stability.

Loyiso Ndlovu, Land Bank

There are good examples in all provinces of transformation that is taking place.

Roelf Meyer, In Transformation Initiative

90% of South Africa’s food is produced by commercial farmers.

Loyiso Ndlovu, Land Bank

You have to increase the number of farmers that farm at commercial scale.

Loyiso Ndlovu, Land Bank

We must maintain food security.

Loyiso Ndlovu, Land Bank

There’s a lot of populist rhetoric on land reform.
