I fought breast cancer while pregnant with twins: This is Jade Wyngaardt's story
Jade Wyngaardt has shared the story of how cancer changed her and her family's life.
She was 27-years-old, with her own burgeoning business, a happy marriage and two young boys when she first found a lump in her breast during a self-exam.
She was diagnosed with stage one cancer. Jade started hormone therapy immediately and had a treatment plan which included a double mastectomy.
But days before her surgery date, she discovered that she was pregnant.
Jade made the decision to terminate her pregnancy because of the added risks.
The plan was to perform the termination of pregnancy, the double mastectomy and the chest reconstruction surgery on the same day.
But the doctors ran out of operating time while in theatre and only went through with cutting out the cancer on her on her breast.
They scheduled her termination of pregnancy for one week later, where she discovered she was carrying twins shortly before the planned abortion.
That's when she changed her mind and decided to carry on with both her pregnancy and her cancer treatment (which included chemotherapy), despite the risks.
Miraculously, her twins were born healthy at 35 weeks, and Jade was even able to breastfeed them on her one remaining breast.
Jade says believes that it was by divine intervention that she and her twins made it through. She also expressed gratitude to her husband, in-laws and family for their support.
Jade has encouraged women to regularly self-examine their breasts and find people to share their experience with.
Sadly, she is no longer in remission and will once again go through surgery and treatment. But Jade says she is stronger and more determined than ever to fight.
