Marikana Massacre: a decade on
In 2012 a build-up of tensions between the striking miners and police at Marikana in the North-West province culminated in the tragedy known as the Marikana Massacre. It all began on 10 August and on 16 August police opened fire on the protesting miners killing 34 and seriously injuring 78.
