SABC in breach of court by sending 'reinstated' journos home - lobby group

Lobby group Media Monitoring Africa says SABC is acting in breach of court order, by shutting the journalists out without yet having filed a formal notice of appeal.

The SABC intends to appeal the latest ruling by the Labour Court to reinstate four senior journalists axed for voicing their concern about the broadcaster's editorial ban on violent protest footage.

The court found that the SABC acted unlawfully when it dismissed the four journalists who now want their jobs back, after the SABC agreed to reverse its broadcast ban.

Andre Van Niekerk ruled that the Krivani Pillay, Foeta Krige, Suna Venter and Jacques Steenkamp were meant to return to the SABC on Wednesday morning, but were turned away.

Media Monitoring Africa's William Bird says it is shocking that the public broadcaster would defy the damning ruling.

The court order was pretty clear, they must come back to work effective immediately.

William Bird, Executive Director of Media Monitoring Africa

He says that it is unlikely that the SABC will win the appeal, as it continues to "abuse the legal system" and "undermine democracy".
