Eusebius McKaiser: It's not about hair, it's about identity and culture

Eusebius McKaiser explained the importance of treading carefully when engaging on the issue of black women's hair, in the aftermath of racial discrimination directed at black scholars at Pretoria High School for girls.

He said that that the current debate about black women's hair was about far deeper issues of identity and culture.

Explaining the complexities surrounding the issue, he said the following:

"I'm going to give you three rules of thumb for allies. Rule number 1: you don not know everything about black people and black people's hair. Rule number 2: always - even if it's a little hard - bite the tongue and show humility when someone else is talking about their lived experiences. Rule number 3: never ever think you've figured it all out about people who are fundamentally different to you."

South Africans have responded with shock at allegations against the school as black scholars were threatened with being barred from exams if they refused to relax their natural hair.
