July is mental health awareness month and according to studies done by University of KwaZulu-Natal researcher Lourens Schlebusch, every day, approximately 21 South Africans commit suicide. The research further revealed that stress could be a significant contributing factor to people committing suicide.

CapeTalk/702 presenter, Redi Tlhabi spoke to Dr Sindisiwe van Zyl, Specialist General Practitioner at South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) about the extent of mental health in South Africa

Mental illness is any illness that affects your mental health and has an effect on your everyday living. It is illnesses like major depression or bipolar mood disorder; they all fall under mental illness

Dr Sindisiwe van Zyl, Specialist General Practitioner

It is reported that in South Africa, 1 in 3 people will or do have a mental illness and yet 80% of people with a mental illness do not get treatment. And Dr van Zyl says people are afraid of the stigma that comes with mental illness so they end up not being diagnosed properly or even getting proper treatment.

Most people end up going through life hoping that they will get over what they are feeling or going through and it doesn’t actually happen

Dr Sindisiwe van Zyl, Specialist General Practitioner
