Regulator to take action against manufacturers of recalled tinned pilchards

The National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) says it will take action against manufacturers of recalled tinned pilchards in tomato sauce.

The regulator held a briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday morning after it ordered all formal retailers and wholesalers to remove and stop selling 400g Pilchards in Tomato Sauce products with immediate effect.

There is a canning deficiency which could make the product unfit for consumption.

Clement Manyathela speaks to Eyewitness News (EWN) reporter Veronica Makhoali who attended the briefing.

We heard from the general manager of food and associated industry that this problem has reached the Sadc region borders including Lesotho, Nambia as well as Swaziland.

The pilchards can was damaged during a process where the source filler began to scratch the can causing it to leak, she reports.

NRCS says it is still in the verification stages to determine how many of these cans were affected. Consumers need to look out for leaking cans.
